Below are the basic steps that may of good help for you. Just read on and try it yourself.
1. Provide A Crate
Canines have a congenital instinct not to soil the place where they sleep. So placing your chi inside a crate while you are at work or during the night when you sleep will keep you from the nightmare of cleaning her mess the next day.
However, be sure to take your pup outside immediately first thing in the morning for her to potty. If you are living in an apartment where a lawn is not available, lead her to the toilet or a mat where she can potty.
2. Be Consistent
The perfect time to do toilet training a chihuahua as mentioned earlier is early in the morning, every after meal, and before going to bed at night. Be sure to be consistent with this in order to condition your chi's body for the proper time to potty.
3. Reward Your Pup for a Job Well Done
It is always good to use positive reinforcement rather than the old discipline oriented way of training. Whenever your chi potty at the right time and the right place where you have assigned her to, give her some treats and praise. This motivates your pup to do well again.
However, in times when your pup accidentally soils the floor, do not punish her. That will be of no help for her. She will only feel fear towards you and she will never understand why you punish her. Just take her away from the area as you clean it. Be sure to apply odor neutralizing agent so that your chi can't trace back the place to potty again.
Don't let the mess discourage you. Keep moving. Continue training her outside or to her mat. She will eventually learn the procedure.
4. Do Not Let Your Chi Loiter Around The House
This is one rule in toilet training a chihuahua that you must keep in mind. It is because letting your pup to go around the house without your presence will just give her chance to potty anywhere especially at corners. It is best to place her in her crate. Leave some toys and food to keep her company. Just allow your pet to run and go around your house with your supervision.
Consistency and patience is required in toilet training a chihuahua. Indeed, chihuahuas are not easy to train. However, with constant training, they will eventually learn.
